Understanding Fidya and Kaffarah
Fidya is a religious donation made in Islam when a fast (particularly in Ramadan) is missed out of necessity (such as old age, chronic illness, or pregnancy) and cannot be made up later. The requirement is to feed one poor person for every fast missed, which is generally equated to approximately 1.5kg to 2kg of wheat or a staple food in your region.
Kaffarah is a more severe penalty for deliberately breaking a fast without a valid reason, or for breaking an oath.
- For an intentionally broken fast: Feeding 60 poor people (if unable to fast 60 consecutive days).
- For a broken oath: Feeding 10 poor people (or clothing them).
