Purifying Your Fast
Ibn Abbas reported: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ enjoined Zakat al-Fitr as a purification for the fasting person from idle talk and obscenities, and to feed the poor." (Abu Dawud).
Zakat al-Fitr (also known as Fitrana) is an obligatory charity paid before the Eid al-Fitr prayer at the end of Ramadan. The head of the household must pay on behalf of themselves and all their dependents (wife, children, etc). The Prophetic measure is one Sa' (approx. 2.5 to 3 kg) of staple food like wheat, barley, dates, or raisins. Today, this can be paid in the cash equivalent to facilitate the poor.
